HONK!, a festival of activist marching bands and music in the streets, began in Boston (USA) and now takes place in various other cities both in the USA (New York, Providence, Seattle, Austin, etc.) and abroad (Australia and Brazil).
Its lineup includes performances in the streets in addition to workshops, house parties, a day set aside for discussions, and a parade that brings together all of the marching bands in attendance. Although the lineup of brass bands doesn’t consist exclusively of activist or politically-engaged marching bands, the coming together of artists and city residents in order to bring about a better world is something inherent to the process of organizing HONK! It requires collaboration, volunteerism, cooperation, and collective action.
The process of planning and putting on the festival is thus a crucial part of the concept of HONK!: it is organized and carried out by the brass band musicians themselves. And through this process, the principles of human rights, social justice, ecology, and a more active, participatory society come to permeate the entire festival.
They demonstrate that every individual is capable of coming together with others to accomplish great, transformative things in the service of a better world. It is a crash course in constructing a society in a way that flies in the face of the paternalistic, “top-down” approaches of governments or businesses and runs counter to the homogenzing logic of a passive, consumption-oriented society.
