Festival de Gannat
July 19 - July 28
Festival de Gannat “World Festival of Cultures” is a festive, cultural and annual institution of the village of Gannat in Auvergne, France. This event brings together for ten days dancers, musicians, artists, volunteers and a wide audience from all continents; advocating a super-diversity of cultural exchanges, musical and choreographic practices. These celebrations, which combine local culture and traditional exchanges, were initiated nearly fifty years ago by Jean Roche and his association La Bourrée Gannatoise, which gathers, collects and performs the musicaland dance cultures of northern Auvergne. Today, the festival is part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage and a member of many European institutions for the safeguarding of musical and folkloric traditions (CIOFF, EMC, AMTA etc.). It assembles nearly 30,000 visitors each year and allows local people to interact with people from all over the world in a wide range of languages.
As a part of the International Year for Indigenous Languages launched by UNESCO, there is also a conference on “Indigenous Languages, Traditional Music and Dance within an Intercultural Performance;” organized jointly by Dr Vikrant Kishore (Deakin University, Australia), Etienne Rougier (University of Montreal, Canada) and the Association Nationale Cultures et Tradition (ANCT), the local association of the festival.
